HENRY NICKEL PASSES

Former Fraser Valley referee and member Henry Nickel passed away on June 22nd in hospital in Chilliwack. Many will remember Henry as a member in the 1990’s when he ran the Dime Dairy with his wife Anne.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Nickel family at this time.

Do you enjoy writing? Do you enjoy like being on the pulse of what’s going on locally in soccer? Then we have an assignment for you! The BCSRA Website and the Flag & Whistle is looking for members to help report about the local soccer scene. This is a volunteer position but one which will give each person real-world experience. DAN KULAI/JACK TINNION SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

Trevor Doyle is this year’s recipient of the combined Dan Kulai/Jack Tinnion Scholarship. The scholarships, setup in memorial of the two deceased members, were combined along with other similar scholarships in the BC Soccer Scholarship Program this year.

RA MEMBER TO OFFICIATE FIRST INTERNATIONAL

Member Michelle Pye will be officiating the Canada-Brazil international at BMO Field next month. The game is a warm-up for Canada’s Women’s team as they head to China for the Summer Olympics. Canada will be looking to avenge a 7-0 loss at the Pan Am Games in Brazil last year. This represents Michelle’s first international.

250s WIN SHIELD…AGAIN

The annual Jack Tinnion Memorial Shield, contested immediately after the Annual General Meeting by the “604s” and “250s” was won again by the 250s by a score of 3-2. The teams were tied 2-2 with the 604s coming back from a 2-0 deficit. The winning goal came in the last minute. A good time was had by all.

NEW REFEREE ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE ELECTED AT AGM

At the recently completed 39th Annual General Meeting of the RA on Saturday, May 3rd the membership elected Elvio Chies as its President and Richard Brownie as its Secretary. The membership also ratified Ron Schaeffer as the Vancouver-Area appointed Director. The new executive is as follows:

REF ASSOCIATION MEMBER TO OFFICIATE CONCACAF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Member Mauricio Navarro will referee the CONCACAF CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL between Pachuca of Mexico and Saprissa of Costa Rica. He, along with Canadian FIFA AR’s Hector Vergara and Joe Fletcher will officiate the “Final of the final”, i.e. the 2^nd leg of the final on Wednesday April 30^th in Mexico. The first leg, which will be refereed by Carlos Batres of Guatemala, goes tonight, Apr 23^rd, at 730pm. Both games are to be shown on FoxSportsWorld Canada (Shaw digital cable Channel 113).

NATIONS CUP FOUNDER PASSES

Geoff Penniston, Founder and Chairman of the Nations Cup Soccer Tournament, the annual “Mini-World Cup” held in Richmond for almost 30 years, passed away last week after a short battle with cancer. Penniston (”Penno”) was the past President and Coach of the Richmond Olympics Football Club for many successful years, and was subsequently instrumental in the forming of Richmond United FC.

Penno’s love for the game of soccer and his ongoing passion to develop and showcase local talent is best personified by the Nations Cup Tournament which is sure to be Geoff’s lasting legacy. Having founded and organised this wonderful soccer event for nearly 30 years, Penno touched, directly or indirectly the lives of generations of local soccer talent by creating a unique soccer experience for players and spectators alike.

A service for Geoff will be held on April 6th at 1300 hours at the Richmond Funeral home, 8420 Cambie, Richmond.

OSA Survey Regarding CSA Draft Strategic Framework

The Canadian Soccer Association has recently released a draft document titled 2008 to 2012 Draft Strategic Framework. In an effort to Provide feedback to the Canadian Soccer Association, The Ontario Soccer Association is conducting a survey based upon the Draft Strategic Framework.

In a response to a query put forth by the Referees Association, BC Soccer Executive Director indicated the CSA will discuss the framework very soon. Mr. Osieck encouraged filling out the survey saying, “Any feedback is good feedback.” (ed note: a quick test of the survey shows participants can indicate they live outside the province).

To complete the survey please visit www.soccer.on.ca/survey. Tom Wilkinson, Manger for Information Systems with the OSA also encourages people to forward the survey to interested parties to provide additional feedback to the CSA. You may also visit The OSA’s website at www.soccer.on.ca for further information.

The OSA will publish the survey results shortly after the survey closes in approximately 2 weeks time.
