UPPER ISLAND REF COORDINATOR & PAST CSA REFEREE COMMITTEE MEMBER MALCOLM

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

(Note: below is notification from VISRA North Secretary Stu Power. A letter of sympathy will be sent from the RA to Malcolm’s wife and family.)

Dear friends in the soccer family on Vancouver Island and beyond it is with deep sadness that I convey the message to you that Malcolm Cowie, Regional Referee Coordinator for the Upper Island and tireless soccer educator for those of us officiating on and around the Island, passed away this morning, Tuesday, January 29th, just after midnight at Campbell River Hospital. He slipped away quietly a little more than a week after suffering a stroke.

Malcolm’s exemplary work with local officials helped not only the youth and adult referees he mentored, but also coaches, players and the game itself in our local area and further afield. Valeria, Malcom’s wife, who has daughter Hayley with her at this time, has given me leave to inform you on her behalf. I would also respectfully request that we restrict the number of incoming emails and telephone calls in this initial period. I’m sure we can all respect that Valeria and the family need time to grieve in private first. At some point later next week, I’m sure they would be better able to appreciate cards of sympathy and support that friends would want to address to: 9380 Martin Park Drive, Black Creek, BC, V9J 1C4.

If the family also wish me to convey to you the details of the funeral service once they are known, I will be sure to forward same.

Sincerely

Stuart Power, VISRA North Secretary
